On Red Nose Day, Friday 24th March, I paid a visit to Moss Hey Primary school in Bramhall.
Head teacher Tabitha Smith showed me around the school where I spoke to both teachers and children, who were wearing their ‘own clothes’ in support of Red Nose Day. Half of the money raised by the school will also go to UNICEF to help fund schools in refugee camps. This is thanks to the efforts of eager children who were determined to do something to help Syrian refugees.
During the visit, I spoke to a group of children representing all year groups about what it means to represent people, as well as speaking to year 5 about democracy and what it means to be an MP. I also recounted my experience visiting Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan in 2015, giving children an example of the kind of work the money they will raise for UNICEF will support. I also recently raised my visit to Jordan in the House of Commons, where I quizzed International Development Secretary Priti Patel on humanitarian aid and education in refugee camps.
It was an absolute pleasure to talk to some wonderful teachers and very bright children at Moss Hey. It’s so encouraging to see children who are aware of the world and want to raise money for some great causes. Thank you to head teacher Tabitha Smith for inviting me to be part of this wonderful day.
