Cheadle MP Mary Robinson recently met with Members of the Royal British Legion when they visited Parliament to discuss their plans to commemorate the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme. The Somme is regarded as one of the largest battles of the First World War and led to the tragic loss of over 19,000 British soldiers on the first day alone on 1st July 1916. The Legion who will be commemorating the battle in Manchester, on 1st July, offer a wide range of support for servicemen past and present on issues such as health and social care and employment through community outreach services and its ‘Civvy Street’ website. Mary met with Legion Members prior to the Armed Forces Act being passed earlier this month. The Armed Forces Act dates back to 1689 where the Bill of Rights made the consent of Parliament a requirement for legally keeping an Army in a time of peace. Mary said: “Members of the Armed Forces community make huge sacrifices in the service our country which is why so many of us today support the work of the British Legion both in honouring the memory of the fallen and building a better future for those currently in service.”
