I recently attended the opening of the new Active Travel Scheme in Cheadle village which marked an exciting milestone for our communities as we gathered to celebrate a brand-new scheme which will improve connectivity and boost our health.
The £1.2m Active Travel Scheme is part of the £13.9m package of Government funding from the Towns Fund which will see a new railway station opened in Cheadle alongside a state of the art Eco Business Park.
Active travel is not just a trendy buzzword but a transformative way of life which helps us shift towards healthier, greener, and more connected communities. As MP for Cheadle, I have lobbied Government for funding for this scheme and worked alongside the Towns Fund board to deliver the project.
The scheme provides a new 1.5km route that links Cheadle village and Cheadle Hulme, featuring new footpaths, cycleways, contraflow cycle lanes, signalled crossings, quiet streets, and widened paths.
It is important to acknowledge the undeniable health benefits that active travel brings to our lives. Cycling and walking are fantastic cardiovascular exercises which strengthen our muscles, boost our immune system, and improves mental wellbeing.
This new route will enhance the connectivity and accessibility of our community, providing a safe and efficient means of transportation for people of all ages and abilities. Cyclists will be able to enjoy a dedicated footpath which is free from the hazards of motor vehicles, connecting neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, and recreational areas.
Not only is active travel great for our health but it plays a crucial role in reducing air pollution and mitigating the effects of climate change. As we choose to leave our cars behind and embrace pedal power, we contribute to a cleaner and greener environment.
The new route in Cheadle will encourage residents and visitors alike to leave their cars at home and embark on a sustainable journey, reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality for everyone.
I encourage all residents across Stockport to visit Cheadle, use the new route, enjoy some exercise and visit our great local businesses.
