Mary Robinson, MP for Cheadle, and her constituent Richard Carr, a hearing dog recipient, recently joined forces to promote the charity which changed Richard’s life: Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
The charity is spreading the word about its Great British Dog Walk fundraiser events, with twenty walks taking place throughout the UK designed to raise awareness and funds for the charity’s vital work with the hearing impaired. MPs at Portcullis House were treated to some hugs with hearing dog puppies in-training and also a special demonstration of how the trained dogs alert their owners to sounds and help vastly improve their quality of life.
Mary Robinson said: “Richard came to me to talk about the great work this charity did for him and other deaf people. I thought it would be a great opportunity to get other MPs to champion the Great British Dog Walks in their constituencies to make sure as many people as possible can go along and support this fantastic cause.”
Richard, aged 49 and from Cheadle, said: “I’ve been profoundly deaf since I was born. Cameron, my hearing dog provided and trained by the charity, has helped me so much, he alerts me to sounds I can’t hear, but just as importantly to me, he is also the best companion. I am so grateful to Mary for helping us to achieve today’s Hearing Dogs day in Westminster. I really hope it will help raise awareness of this amazing charity all over the country.”
