Over the past few weeks I have been concerned to hear about the spike in burglaries in the area, with thieves particularly targeting homes and cars. One can only imagine what a frightening experience this must be for the victims of these crimes, and it is a real worry for all local residents concerned about the safety of their families and the security of their home.
I have been in regular contact with the Police over the last few months about these incidents, to press them to take action to deter the burglaries and deal with the criminals. The Police advise that there has been an increase in presence from local Officers during the afternoon, overnight and early mornings, and a number of arrests have been made. The Police provided reassurance that they are actively working to identify all offenders and reduce the number of thefts.
Recently, I met with the Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service, Brandon Lewis MP in Cheadle Hulme, along with Chief Inspector Leon Jacobs, Inspector Pete Walsh, Inspector Bob Cantrell and some local residents to discuss the new Policing model for the area following a change within Stockport Police. The new initiative allows for Officers to spend longer out on the beat, rather than returning to the station to complete paperwork, and we all agreed this was a welcome change and I hope this new model with help to deter criminals and reduce crime.
The meeting with Brandon Lewis MP was also attended by representatives of Neighbourhood Watch and I am keen to support these volunteer initiatives which can be of real assistance to the Police and local community. I would really encourage local people to consider setting up a group if there isn’t one locally, and if anyone would like any further information please telephone my office on 0161 672 6855.
The spates of anti-social behaviour from youths also concerns me, and again I was in regular contact with the Police over the summer and autumn months after a number of incidents in parks, particularly in Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme.
Just this week, I was concerned to see the damage to the bus shelter and telephone box in Cheadle village, apparently caused by a group of people hanging around on High Street. Again, I have been in contact with the Police, who have confirmed they had several reports and the group dispersed when Officers arrived. However this is an ongoing investigation and I am encouraged the Police take these type of incidents seriously and are working to deal with this unnecessary criminal behaviour.
These are really important local issues and ones which I will continue to press the Police on, and am always happy to respond to constituents with specific concerns so if you do need any assistance please email me at [email protected]
