Over the last seven days, the discussions around the tier status of Greater Manchester have failed to reach an agreement. This impasse cannot go on and I urge local leaders to agree a clear path forward today. In my meeting with the Prime Minister in Downing Street on Thursday morning, I set out the imperative of a strong support package in the event that new restrictions are necessary. If the case for further restrictions is indeed made, it must not leave people on the lowest incomes out of pocket as winter approaches. I also stressed the importance of leisure and hospitality and the impact of any such restrictions on these jobs in my constituency.

I further reiterated these concerns alongside my Conservative colleagues on a call with the Downing Street chief strategic advisor, Sir Edward Lister, on Friday evening. I now urge our local council leaders including Stockport MBC to agree a clear strategy, that serves the best interests of our residents and businesses and protects the health, lives and livelihoods of the people of Cheadle and Greater Manchester. 

Ill thought out and unwanted interventions from MPs in other areas of the country only serve to fan the flames of an already overheated debate when calm heads are needed.

There is a time and a place for a “Town Hall steps” speech, but now is the time for consensus and agreement between local council leaders and Government.
